Although at the time Vic Viper wasn't credited as the first player ship in this game, it later became known it was. Based on an arcade title, it's a direct descendant of Gradius (and not Thunderforce as this site lists it), your mission is to destroy the evil Golem, in Japan this game and it's later sequel are known as Salamander. The second ship is credited in this game as the Lord British, who would make a later appearance in Gradius Gaiden on Playstation (released only in Japan).
